When you are traveling though the Fellowship Prayer and you hit the first "L", it kinda hijacks you and for some of us we may just need to camp there for a while, and even not move forward. Last week our Thursday night worship team was praying, asking the Lord for our "love" to abound, and the testimonies in our briefing afterwards were pretty amazing. What happens when we sit before the Lord and ask Him to help our hearts to love in a genuine way, is deeply transforming.
If we were really honest, "love" is not easy. In order to love others or love God, our hearts need to be softened, tenderized, and humbled. We need to be influences by the Holy Spirit to love God, others, and even ourselves. For many years I struggled with self-hatred. I looked at everyone else as people that God made "correctly", but I looked at myself as having too many flaws to be counted worthy. I would struggle and strive to be excellent so that I could feel "right", but I never did. It was never enough. I want to express a few different things to focus on when praying for God's Love to abound in you.
1. Pray that God would help you to love yourself the way He loves and cherishes you.
He created you with love in His heart toward you and when you do not love yourself you are telling God, "You don't know how to create good things, because you mad me and I am not good." How can we love anybody else when we are set on the wrong foundation toward ourself. So we ask God for the understanding of His love toward us to abound in our hearts. Saying, "Father, how do you feel toward me? Would You show me how you love me and allow this love to be felt in my heart?"
2. Pray that God would tenderize your heart, by the Holy Spirit, so that you can Love Jesus with all of your heart, mind, and strength.
We need the Holy Spirit to help us, to soften our hearts and make us sensitive to the Lord so we can love Him. We need to continue to grow in our love for God and not to stay stagnant. I regularly ask God to help me love Him. Watch as you ask this, your love for God will increase and you will find that wars you have been fighting in the flesh wont seem so hard. Instead of asking God to overcome this and that, just ask to about in your love for Him, and see how that effects the rest of your life.
3. Pray that God will help you love others.
If we are doing #1 and #2, can I just say how much easier #3 is? It is easy to love others when we have a right view of God's love for me and I am in love with Him. None the less, I need help for the Holy Spirit to truly love others with compassion as Christ did.
Father, I ask that You would pour out Your love into my heart by releasing the influences of the Spirit to give me revelation of Your love for me, that it may overflow in love back to You and to others. I ask that You would give me the grace and strength I need to love you with all of my heart, soul, strength, and mind. Help me to see myself through Your eyes, and allow that love You have for me to be seen through me as I love others. Help me God to abide in Your love and to continue to draw from You in times of doubt and weakness. Amen.
